As a fence contractor, I go into the Home Depot in Knightdale NC often. I was there last week picking up gate hardware for a fence we were installing and struck up a conversation with one of Home Depot’s associates. The associate told me there was a 5 year old boy who lived in Wendell NC who had been in an accident which left him paralized and in a wheel chair. To make matters worse, the boy’s home did not have a wheelchair ramp so getting him in and out of the house was difficult. The associate told me Home Depot was donating ALL of the materials and a group of Home Depot associates were donating their time on Saturday to build this ramp. She then told me if I wasn’t busy Saturday morning, they would love for me to come out and help.
We all met at the boy’s home on Saturday morning at 9am. There were about a dozen volunteers, most from Home Depot. The lead carpenter on the project was Bob Walker and Jack Combs of Laurel Hills Home Medic (phone # 787-6813). They were both volunteering their time as well. Bob and Jack were very nice and instructed other volunteers on what needed to be done. I was the cutman (cutting lumber to the lengths needed). In no time at all the project was underway and going well. Volunteers came and went throughout the day as their schedule allowed. Some stayed all day, some worked in the morning, and some came in the afternoon. Everyone worked well together and the project was completed around 330pm Saturday afternoon. As Bob and I were putting the tools away, the boys father came out to say thank you. You could tell how much this meant to him and how appreciative he was. This was a wonderful project to be a part of
Thank you to Home Depot for donating ALL of the materials needed for this project and to all of the associates for volunteering their time. Thank you for letting me be a part of this as well. Thank you to Bob Walker and Jack Combs of Laurel Hills Home Medic (919-787-6813) for leading all of this with your expertise.
A reporter came out from the Eastern Wake News and did an article in the paper. You can read the article here..
